All Hands on Deck for The Knockmealdown Crossing
Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes 20th April 2008
The walks this Sunday were all in the Knockmealdowns and not on the Galtees . To avoid disappointment for anyone waiting in Cahir the Peaks leaders went by Cahir to pick up walkers waiting there and got a few recruits.
The early walk was led by Jim O Flaherty who was training in the leaders for the Knockmealdown crossing and he gave them a good lively walk in lovely walking conditions but poor visibility. Jim walked the full length of the B route from Baylough to Newcastle and afterwards engaged in some rehydration therapy in the local hostelry. For the technical minded the walk takes 6 hours at a spanking pace (naismith +) John Morrissey led the 11.30 walk in from the Vee and John used the gully from Lough Moylan to the coll as his entry route. After gaining the high ground it was eastwards all the way by Knockmealdown. Knockagnauv, Knocknafallia before breaking onto the Mellery road at the Crois.
Martha Beardmore led the afternoon walk and also trained in the leaders for next Saturdays Knockmealdown Crossing. This walk is on forest tracks and uses the Tipperary Heritage Way as far as Gotenbridge where it changes to the East Munster Way which brings the walk to Newcastle Village which is the start and finish point of the Knockmealdown Crossing next Saturday 26
