Peak's Mountaineering Club Notes  16th June 2009

Sunday was Bar –B –Q Sunday and Mother Nature gave us a lovely fine and warm day. Early in the morning there was some very heavy rain in the Suir Valley but nary a bit on the Comeraghs. Tom Dalton led the early walk and with a fine troop of walkers with him Tom parked up at Glenary Waterworks and proceeded to head due east. Taking in Long Hill and Lachnafrankee before a big swing back to the cars before onwards travel to the chosen dining rendezvous.
John Bourke led the afternoon walk which was the biggest this season. John aided by Nora and Bernard led off by forest paths before crossing the Glenary stream on the new bridge and heading for the trig point. Keeping an eye on time John led back in a straight line by mountain, deer track and forest road with the anticipation of good food spurring on the thirty hill walkers. The smell of grilling steaks. succulent burgers and massive sausages was what the hungry troops needed all served up with plenty of coleslaw, salad mix and cream cakes with minerals for refreshment. All this took place in one of the forest entrances and with the highly trained catering department at full throttle. This proved that indeed men can cook and the culinary skills of Jerry wielding a spatula, Pascal on the tongs, Joe forking the burgers and John firing the big twin barbeque system was a treat in itself. The ladies were not to be outdone and Martha, Margo, Bernie, Nuala and Noreen had the extras which made everything come together on the day. The event was a lovely social occasion and the food was plentiful and excellent. Great to see Nuala back after her operation and making such an excellent recovery enjoying the craic and banter of her club mates Well done and thanks to all for their hard work and if I have omitted anyone’s name mea culpa.
There is an evening walk on Slievenamon on Wednesday night leaving Eldon’s at 18.30 led by Jim O Flaherty. Justin leads a Saturday walk at 12.30 from Eldon’s also. Sundays walk on the 21st is in the Knockmealdown’s and is the Eldon Walk with mass at the Mass Rock . Michael Tobin leads the 9.30 walk with Michael Power leading the 10.30 walk. Pat Beardmore leads the afternoon walk at 12.30 assisted by Fiona Hegarty and Helen McNamara. Mass will be celebrated at the Mass Rock at approx 4.30 for deceased members of the Peaks Club and their families and all are welcome to attend.
