The Eldon Walk Print

Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes  22nd June 2009

Today’s walk was the Eldon Walk with a special mass at the mass rock in the Knockmealdown’s over the lovely village of Newcastle and under the shadow of Knockardbounce. Fiona Hegarty assisted by the Chairman Jim O Flaherty led the afternoon walk with 26 walkers in her charge. Fiona parked at Doonageeha and led gently onto Knockardbounce. Heading southwards to the track she used the firm ground as her guide to the county boundary and crossed to Knockmeal and some light refreshment. Swinging back to the track Fiona led across the Knocknasculloge before dropping into the hidden glen which shelters the Mass Rock.

Michael Power led the early walk and also parked in a similar area to Fiona before crossing the road to Knockroe. Working his way through the brambles and furze Michael led under Crohan towards Knockmeal. This track has become somewhat overgrown and there were battle scars left on some of the crew but nothing serious. Crossing the road Michael led back across Knockardbounce to rendezvous with the remainder of the club.

Mass was celebrated by Fr Timmy O Connor and departed comrades remembered. Prayers said for the members present and absent and the large congregation participated in this special close to a seasons walking in our lovely mountains. Afterwards there was beautiful buffet meal in Eldon’s for the Peaks members given by the Morris family to whom we are deeply indebted. From all in the Peaks Mountaineering Club a very special thanks to the Morris family for the use of their premises during the year as our club meeting place and wishing all health and happiness for the remainder of the year.

Next Sunday the June 28th is the last organised walk until the season resumes in September. Leaders for this walk are 10.30 Joe Quigley, 12.30 Jim O Flaherty with Noreen Greene and Aine Lynch assisting. All walks leave from Eldon’s at the given time.
