Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes 28th September 2009

What an excellent day Sunday was for walking in the Comeragh’s. John Morrissey led the early walk and John started from the Mahon Falls area. Heading south west John soon passed the deserted farm house and headed towards the Monavullagh Mountains. Finding some handy tracks and after a bit of contouring John reached the top and swung smartly northwards. Using the high ground to advantage John circled the Coumtay’s and back to the cars by Comeragh Mountain.

Pascal Byrne led the afternoon walk and this was the biggest walk to date with almost thirty walkers. Pascal was assisted by his lieutenants Joe and Martha. Starting from Kilclooney wood off the main Carrick on Suir to Clonea road Pascal led in through the wood and on to open mountain. Setting course for Coumshingaun ridge it was a long slog up the ridge. Some food and drink at the top was called for and then it was on to Fas Coum, the highest point in the Comeragh’s which is marked by a small cairn of stone but is not marked on maps. Pascal then led north wards for a bit before descending off the high ground and the long loop back to the car park after an excellent day on top of the Comeragh’s.
Walks next Sunday are at the new times so please note 10.00 walk leaves Eldon’s with leader to be arranged. The 12.00 walk will leave for Goatenbridge to take part in the National Trails Day Walk in the Knockmealdown’s which Kevin O Donnell is leading.
