New Walks Schedule under Way Print

Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes  12th October 2009

The new walking schedule got off to a great start with both walks well supported. Gerry Treacy led the early walk which started at 10am from Eldon’s. Choosing the southern slopes of the Galtees as his route Gerry based his crew at the mountain lodge in Glengarra Wood. Straight westwards were the first leg by Knockeenatoung and dropping off to Coopers Wood. Crossing the stream with his crew of eleven he headed for Knocknagalty and the deserted farmyard under Monabrack for the lunch break. Turning at the coll the wall was the next marker and then the eastwards turn up Galtymore and dropping off to the Black Road. A bit of nifty low level walking brought him through the woods and back to the start after covering about twenty kilometres of good walking.
Fiona Hegarty led the afternoon walk which also started at the new time. This was a big walk with over thirty walkers and Fiona was assisted by Michael Greene and Fionnuala Kennedy newly qualified in mountain skills. Fiona started from the opposite side of the Galtees from Gerry and based her walk on Rossadrehid Village. A nice steady walk soon had her team at Lake Muskry and a spot of lunch. Heading southwards she led onto Knockastackeen before reversing back to the cars by tracks. The mountain skills came into good stead as this walk had a lot of new members and for many the first time on the mountains.
The evening information session for new or intending members continues in Eldon’s at 9.30pm on Wednesday nights. This is a no obligation night and all are welcome.
All walks next Sunday the 18th October are in the Comeragh’s and the leaders are 10.00 am Miriam Joyce assisted by Pat Fahey. The 12.00pm walk is led by Donald Whooley assisted by Robert O Connor and Michael Greene. Note the leaders sometimes have to swap with another leader for reasons outside their control and this is part of the normal club arrangements. Call Bernard on 0862937220 for more information or log onto our website at www.peaksmcclonmel.ie for our entire walks schedule and club information.
