Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes What a change a week brings on the weather front. The fine sunny days are a memory as the normal weather service resumes with low cloud, mist and cold winds. Sunday was a normal Irish weather day and the Peaks felt fully at home in the Comeragh’s, well equipped and suitably motivated. Miriam Joyce assisted by Pat Fahey led the 10am walk and with a large crew to mind she headed across the trailer bridge and up Coumfea. A little nifty foot work brought her to the “Nose” and straight up with a little slipping on the difficult bits. The conditions on top were not great with driving misty rain and very poor visibility. Setting course for the Sean Bean ag Cath an Tabach she led around the rim over the Coum’s. Lunch was taken in the shelter of the little Glen before heading for the Boola’s and the descent of Carrignagower both by the rocky slope and for the more daring by the green gully. Crossing the Gap it was onto the Knockanaffrin ridge and the smart turn south over Coumduala Lough and back by wire to the transport.
Bernard Lennon led the afternoon walk with Aine Lynch and Robert O Connor assisting. Parking also in the Nire Car Park it was a steady walk to the Gap. Looking at the messy conditions on the Knockanaffrin Ridge Bernard chose a low level walk into the Coum Iarthar Loughs. Keeping the bulk of Carrignagower to his right this walk is a nice introduction to the beauty of a seldom visited part of the Comeragh’s. The inner part of the Lough’s is not unlike a scene from Lord of the Rings and is stunning in its beauty and a first for some. This walk is a little over ten kilometres with no difficult technical terrain and a good introduction to the beauty on our doorstep. The eighteen walkers including some new club members coped admirably in conditions which is often the norm in winter mountaineering and hill walking in the Comeragh’s.
Reminder about the introduction talk in Eldon’s each Wednesday evening in October for new members and intending members .The talk is a no obligation event and feel free to come along with and find out about the Peaks Club. We walk the local mountains and also have a number of away trips to Irish and foreign locations and this weekend there is a trip to the Dolomites in Italy. The trip to Achill Island after Christmas is taking names and the sheet is on the notice board in Eldon’s and on our website.
