Peak's Mountaineering Club Notes 1st November 2009

All the action was on the Knockmealdown range on Sunday and Kevin O Donnell assisted by Michael Power led the early walk. Starting from Mount Melleray Abbey car park Kevin led onto the back end of Dyrick by using tracks and local knowledge. Finding the Rough Glen River too much of a handful to cross due to flooding he detoured on to the R669 and re-entered the mountain before the Glenakeefe Bridge on the pilgrim track . Using this well trodden St Declan’s Way route from ages past Kevin and Michael led onto the coll between Knockmealdown and Knocknagnauv. Setting the compass on a bearing of 125 degrees it was a straight walk onto Knocknafallia in greasy underfoot conditions. At the turning point it was southwards to the car park and a change of clothes after a very enjoyable walk for ten fit club members.
Ruairi O Caislean led the afternoon walk at noon assisted by Seamus Maher. This was a well supported walk with twenty seven clubbers out for exercise on the Mountains. Ruairi parked his group in the car park at Baylough and headed up the wall to the top of Sugarloaf. A swing south eastwards had all of them on the way to the big one. At the coll Ruairi split the walk with some adventurous folk led by Kevin Bowen and Gerry Hally dropping down to the pair of lakes and hard climb up the back end of Knockmealdown. The conditions on top were cold windy and threatening further rain. Ruairi retraced part of his earlier route and descended on a different angle to the cars as the rain and mist gathered.
