A Pet Day in the Comeraghs Print

Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes  9/10/11

Sunday was one of those pet days which bring home the favourable locations of the Peaks Club in the bowl of mountains which  border the region of Tipperary Waterford .  The weather forecast was great and the Peaks club members hit the Comeragh Mountains in large numbers.
Michael Power led the afternoon walk and assisted by Richard Williams and Jimmy Trehy led thirty three walkers on the scenic tour of the ridge. Using the two car strategy Michael led in from Hanora’s Cottage using the Glennanore Stream and the deserted village as his guide and worked his way onto the ridge at Knocksheegowna. With the stupendous views out over the valley to Slievenamon and onwards to the Devils Bit on a clear and pleasant day Michael fed and watered his charges.  Eastwards along the ridge towards the Gap well motivated and in good order Michael led his troops and the pleasant walk back to the cars for transfer to start point after covering thirteen konometers and some 680 metres of height gain.
The early walk was led by Joe Quigley with Gerry Treacy subbing for Pascal. Parking on the opposite side of the Comeragh Ridge at the scout’s cottage Joe led to Lough Mohra. Uphill climbing brought them to the ridge and a smart walking pace had them in the Gap. The group split at this point with Gerry climbing Carrignagower and swinging around the rim of the Coum Iachtar Loughs to Join Joe in the coum below. Swinging Northwards towards the woods using the stream as a guide Joe led the combined group to Coum Duala Lough and worked his way back to the cars through the wood with a well exercised crew of seventeen after covering more than 20 kilometres of good tough walking.
