Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes 7 December 2009 Peaks Christmas Party Night was one of the best to date. We had a great crowd, good food and music to match the mood. The day started with our traditional walk in from Ballymacabry with forty club members out for the day’s craic. Kevin O Donnell had his hands full with the conditions underfoot which had slips, trips and falls on poor underfoot conditions. Kevin led bravely where angels would have retreated to the comfort of a hostelry and arrived in the Raheen House Hotel in good order with a full crew. Showers, a dry towel and some TLC soon had our walkers in condition for a night’s fun and dancing which they did until the small hours of Sunday morning. Well done to all our leaders, committee members and musicians and hotel staff for a most enjoyable night. Go mbeirimid beo ar an am seo aris.
Fiona Hegarty assisted by Flan Real and Nora O Donovan headed out on the Knockmealdown’s at noon on the following day for a party recovery walk. Fiona parked up on the county line and headed northwards for the Liam Lynch monument by forest tracks. Swinging sharply southwards Fiona and crew climbed Crohan West in windy conditions but mercifully without any rain by way of the fence. Dropping off the top it was through the coll and another swing eastwards to the forest and a little break in the shelter. The remainder of the walk was a fairly civilised affair before the descent to the cars still dry and satisfied with the party recovery strategy.
This Sunday the 13th is the Holly Walk for all the families which starts from Eldon’s at 13.30. We will be searching for the elusive berry but our scouts have been out and the coordinates are under lock and key until the day. Bring some twine and a pair of gloves as it is prickly stuff to handle. There is a children’s party afterwards and the gentleman of the season Mr Santa Claus will be attending for a short while to meet the children and listen to their requests for presents. All children are asked to have their letters posted in time this week so that he has had time to read them before the party. The adults have their usual walks in the Comeragh’s with Ray Prendergast assisted by John Morrissey leading the 10.00 walk. Pat Fahey assisted by Robert O Connor and Brendan Nyhan are leading the 12.00 walk and all walks will be scheduled to finish early as sunset is now at 4pm this month. More details on our website at www.peaksmcclonmel or by calling our PRO Bernard on mobile no 0862937220. See you all at the Children’s Party. |
