Santa Pays a Visit Print

Peaks Mountaineering Club  22nd December 2009

Santa visited the children of the Peaks members on Sunday and listened to all their requests for presents on Christmas Eve. He told them he had received all their letters and his helpers were busy packing the presents and labelling them to make sure they were delivered to all the correct addresses. He is delighted that the children are leaving out carrots and apples for his reindeer and a glass of milk for him. No whiskey please as the new driving laws is in force even for Santa. All the children are a credit to their parents and have promised to empty the dishwashers and give a hand with the housework on the big day. Earlier in the day the holly walk had a great attendance and after some detours to throw off holly spies Jerry led to the source of the elusive berry with scarcely a wet foot. The party afterwards in Eldon’s was the usual great event hosted by the Morris family and the Peaks Club for the kids and their parents with lots of noise , crisps , fizzy drinks and Santa himself in his den. Well done everyone.

The early walk was led by Tom Dalton and Tom gave this walk plenty of welly. Legging it in from the Nire Valley Car Pak to the Boola’s and up the end spur to the Cairn. Next stop was Coumshingaun around by Iske Solas and Knockaunapeebra. Continuing on his circular walk Tom led to Comeragh Mountain and across to Coumfea in bitter cold but dry conditions and then turned northwards across the stream by the stepping stones before the trailer bridge and the cars. The walk was a a comfortable steady pace and covered about 22km and nearly 2000mts of height and one of our senior leaders Kevin reckoned it was a classic Comeragh walk.
Pat Fahey led the noon walk and Pat parked up at the Chimneys’ in Monyaha Bog. Setting course for the bottom end of the Knockanaffrin ridge Pat crossed over onto the northern slopes and contoured to Lough Mora. Pat used some local knowledge and climbed back onto the ridge near the trig point before dropping off back to the cars in some very pleasant walking.
Walks on Sunday the 20th December are in the Knockmealdown’s and the 10am walk is led by John Byrne assisted by Miriam Joyce. The 12 noon walk is led by Andrew Ryan assisted by Eoin Kelleher and Lorcan Ryan. There is a recovery walk on St Stephens day in the Comeragh’s led by John Morrissey and this walk is for the confused and befuddled to help them regain fitness after the excess of the festive season. We will toast departed friends and share mince pies, chocolates, experiences etc .There is also a walk on Slievenamon on Sunday the 27th December and this is the last walk of 2009 with both a 10am and noon walk. Ordinance survey map no 67 for this walk and the leaders are Seamus Maher, Bernard Lennon, Sean Walsh, Kaye Mullaney, Niamh Barrett. Season’s greetings to all our friends and club mates and a big thank you to the landowners whose lands we have walked and enjoyed in the season past. Good health and cheer for the coming year to all and remember to keep it safe out there.
