A good start on the New Year’s resolutions was made on Sunday when both walks were very well supported. The early walk was led by Michael Tobin who had a eight person crew properly geared for the weather. Having scanned his crew Michael decided to treat them to some real arctic conditions and headed off westwards from Kilclooney Wood to the spur where he sourced an attractive gully and which brought them to below Knockaunapeebra. Switching direction to the highest point in the Comeragh range at Fas Coum with crunching snow and solid frozen bog underfoot he did not tarry long there but headed for Iske Solas and some shelter before circling Coumshingaun and dropping back down on the spur. Once lower it was the slippery walk across the moraine to the edge of the wood and out to the cars.
Brendan Nyhan led the afternoon walk with this lieutenant Fionnuala Kennedy assisting and Brendan choose the Kilsheelan woods for his walk. Parking up across the bridge over the Suir a short piece of road work led to the entrance and good walking conditions. Brendan and Fionnuala had a good leg stretch designed for their large crew and using the lovely Coillte forest roads to good effect he led to Harney’s Cross with lovely underfoot snow. The break was in the shelter of an earthen bank and trees with strong sunshine to order before heading off back by way of Ravens Rock and Burnt Rock. The walk covered over twelve kilometres and not a wet foot. Brendan had walked his route and done his homework before his lead and the walk was one of the best. The Coillte woodlands are a marvellous recourse and enable hill walking to continue under all weather conditions for all age groups and thanks to the forestry management for the excellent condition of the network of accessible forest tracks.
Next week’s walks on Sunday the 10th January are in the Galtee Mountains. Ger Barrett and John Morrissey lead the early walk at 10am. Bernard Lennon assisted by Sean Walsh and Nora Donovan leads the afternoon walk at 12 noon. There will be a pick up at the Co-Op Stores in Cahir prior to each walk. All walks start from Eldon’s at the given time and club members are advised to bring all the gear as the forecast for the present Siberian conditions is to continue for some time.
