| Alpine Conditions in Ireland January 2010 |

|
These photos - see Photo Gallery - may be of interest to some club members in that some of the images provide a very good idea of the exceptional winter mountaineering conditions that we had over a three week period around Christmas 2009 and early January 2010. They were truly brilliant and unusual walking/climbing conditions that you would normally have to go to Scotland or the Alps to experience -- not here in Kerry, Waterford or Tipperary!!
The first photos were taken in the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, showing an ascent of Carrauntoohil by way of the Curved Gully on the NW side of the mountain and some great views from the summit cross. The rest of the photographs taken were in the Comeraghs, with one or two of Galtymore. The climbing pictures were taken in the Gully at the back of the Scilloge Loughs. There is one unusual one of Michael Berry and Greg Kenny standing out in the middle of the upper lake. Greg says that ," in 30 years I have never seen that lake frozen to the extent that you could walk safely across it."
The people in the pictures are Greg Kenny, Michael Tobin, Tom Dalton and Michael Berry. Photos by Greg Kenny |
