Excellent Weather on the Galtees Print

Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes   31st January 2010

Sunday’s weather may have been harsh but it was excellent weather to be out on the Galtee Mountains. Kevin Bowen was in charge of the early walk and taking advantage of the walking conditions he had a long and interesting walk planned. Starting from the southern side of the Galtees in sunny conditions Kevin led off through Glengarra woods and headed for Loughlin’s Castle which is a rocky landmark on top of the Eastern end of the Galtee range. Dropping down to Lake Muskry he contoured to Boreen Lough and after a course adjustment climbed the northern side of Galtybeg. Swinging westwards he climbed up Galtymore and rested to admire the stunning views in good visibility. Another course adjustment brought his group to Knockeenatoung and the descent to Glengarra woods and the car after covering 18 kilometres in 7 hours. Maurice Halley enjoyed his crucifixion in the Galtees and is looking forward to a repeat later.
Andrew Ryan led the afternoon walk assited by Fionnuala Kennedy and Seamus Hayes in from the waterworks. Using the track to the open mountain Andy led to the pathway which crosses the stream and up the eastern side of the Cush. He had a large number of club walkers with him and once gathered after a rest he dropped off across the coll to Boreen Lough. Staying low under Knockastackeen he led his 26 crew in a long loop back to the cars at the waterworks after a lovely walk in frost and snow not to mention the icicles hanging on top of the Cush.
All walks next week the 7th February are in the Knockmealdown’s and the leaders are 10am John Morrissey assited by Pat Fahey. The afternoon walk at 12pm is led by Ruairi O Caisleain assisted by Eoin Kelleher and Helen McNamara. To take part in any trips it is necessary to be a club member and have completed a number of walks to ensure physical fitness for the type of holiday planned.
