Nothing like a well researched walk! Print

Peak's Mountaineering Club Notes     15th March 2010

Kevin O Donnell was the man in charge of the midday walk ably assited by Nora O Donovan and Sean Walsh. Kevin had carried out his research earlier in the week and walked the walk first with Sean. The Galtee walk was from the far end off the old main road to Cork. Using the road in by the Yellow House below Skeheenaranky Kevin led his large group onto the mountain between Knockaterriff and Knocknagalty. Steady climbing soon had his group at spot height 629 metres and after time to gather their breath a decision was taken to head for the wall above Bengower. Kevin passed the leaders baton to Kaye Mullaney and with her map and compass led to Lyracappul and then some course adjustments for a southward heading to Knockaterriff Beg. Dropping off the high Ground it was Kevin in the lead and with Nora and Sean on the tail the drop to Blackrock River in good order. Picking up the old track to the deserted farm via the sheep pen a handy forest track led back to the cars after about five hours on the Galtees. The visibility today was very good, ground dry and firm and winds light, what more does a Peaks clubber need to enjoy themselves.

Next week’s walks are all Knockmealdown’s and Jimmy Trehy leads the noon walk at 12 assisted by Bernard Lennon and Robert O Connor. The early walk at 10am is led by Greg Kenny assisted by Miriam Joyce.
