Mark April 24th in your Diary Print

Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes  22nd March 2010

Sunday was a day for switching leaders and both walks were led by different club leaders by arrangement. Michael Tobin led the early walk on the Knockmealdown’s and started from the village of Goatenbridge. Leading in by the high level track Michael crossed the Glengalla River and picked up the path to the north side of Knocknagnauv and into the coll. Swinging his crew for Knockmealdown and the nasty pull to the top where he stopped for lunch with a view. Rested and fed Michael led off towards the turn off for Lough Moylan or the dry lake as this piece of water does not exist except on ordinance survey maps. Contouring around Knockshane Michael dropped to the “enchanted wood “and the lovely green walk to the Heritage Way. After that is was a gentle stroll to the cars after covering 18 kilometres and a height gain of 900 metres in lovely pleasant weather.
Jimmy Trehy led the afternoon walk and immediately volunteered two assistants Seamus Maher and John Bourke as his assistants. Starting from the county line on the Melleray Road Jimmy led up Knockmeal and dropped into the coll and climbed Knocknafallia and lunched in comfort . Turning southwards he led down the shoulder to Knockboy and the road. Crossing the road and picking up the track he climbed Knocknanask crossed over and dropped off north wards to pick up the cars and a welcome change of clothes after a great days walking. Reminder to all our club members of the Knockmealdown crossing which takes place on Saturday the 24th April that you make your diary entry now. This is a big event for the club and we need all hands on the day to man checkpoints, register the entrants and lead the walks and feed the troops when they return.
The walks for Sunday the 28th March are on Slievenamon with Pat Fahey assisted by Seamus Maher leading the 10am walk. The 12 noon walk is led by Ruairi O Caislean assisted by Niamh Barrett and Richard Williams. Make a note for yourself that summertime begins early in the morning and do not get caught out by missing your walk.
