Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes 29th March 2010 Sunday had walks on two different mountains. The noon walk was led by Niamh Barrett and Michael Greene. Niamh led in from the popular access route onto the mountain of women and once she had assembled her crew of twenty plus walkers led off in good order up the track. Niamh set an easy pace and had a number of stops for our new walkers. Sundays walk was an international walk with Canadian, German Finnish and U.K club members out for a day’s enjoyment. A short stop on the top at the cairn and then Niamh dropped off on a new a course for the “Bishop of Brisbane Cross “at Carrigeenacor with a break for a spot of lunch. Setting off eastwards towards the head waters of the Killurney water supply and crossing Gleann Bullan Niamh and Michael picked up the fire break track and headed home on good ground. The walk is a very pleasant introduction to the club for new walkers and also got in a good leg stretch of over 12 kilometres in nice dry underfoot conditions.
Pascal Byrne led the early walk by arrangement and Pascal started from Eldon’s and using the tow path to Ferryhouse along the River Suir. Leaving the river it was into the woods at Glenmorgan and steady climbing to Ravens Rock. Crossing the road at Harney’s Cross to the old Military Road and the open mountain onto the Knockanaffrin Ridge Pascal led to the Trig Point. A course adjustment to Monyaha Bog and a home heading onto Lachnafrankee was next. Crossing Long Hill and dropping to the Glenary Stream before the swing for the back of the Holy Year Cross and the descent by Scrouthea to start .This is a long walk covering about 24 kilometres and takes about seven hours but there are no difficult technical parts.
Great to see Justin back after his “backpacking in the sun” holiday. He will be off again on another stretch of the “Camino Way “ and will gladly advise on the walk if you are interested.
