Peak's Mountaineering Club Notes 19th April 2010 Saturday the 24th of April is our big day when the Knockmealdown Crossing takes place. The crossing is the full length of the Knockmealdown range with three different walks . The “A” walk is the early starter at 7am and covers a distance of 29.5 km. The height gain is 1606 metres and normal time for this walk is 8 hours. This walk is a self navigation walk with checkpoints and waypoint which have to be marked off on a control card which will be issued at the start in the Glenview Lounge Gotenbridge at 7am.The walk starts out on the Avondu Way and it is an excellent walk requiring a very high level of fitness and experience. Walkers on this route must be able to self navigate. The bus leaves the Glenview Lounge for the start point sharp at 7.30am
The “B” walk is a distance of 17 km with a height gain of 1050 metres and takes 7 hours to cover at a moderate pace. This is a good walk over the high peaks of the Knockmealdown’s suitable for experienced walkers .This is a lead walk with experienced leaders from the Peaks Club providing the navigation and route. A good level of fitness is also required for this walk as there are some high peaks to cross which require mountain experience for the legs. This walk starts also from the Glenview Lounge with the bus leaving for the start point at 9am sharp.
The “C” walk covers a distance of 8.5 km and ascends to 300metres and takes 4-5 hours. The walk starts at the Tipperary / Waterford County Line on the Melleray Road and is suitable for walkers with a reasonable to good level of fitness. This is a lead walk designed to cater for all wishing to walk the Knockmealdown’s. The walk crosses Crohan and drops into the woods to the Liam Lynch Monument before walking back to Goatenbridge by forest tracks and trails. The bus from the Glenview Lounge to the start point leaves sharp at 11.30am.
All wishing to take part in the day on the Knockmealdown’s are required to be at the Glenview Lounge at least a half hour before the bus leaves to register and secure a bus seat. Walkers are required to have walking boots, raingear rucksack, food and a drink. All walks are on open mountains with some descending and climbing and walking poles can be very helpful. All walkers must check in at the Glenview Lounge at finish of their walk to be marked off the registration cards to avoid Mountain Rescue call out. A change of clothes are advised as there is a hot meal and music to round off the day. Please note there is an entry fee to cover bus and the meal. For the technical minded the co ordinates for the Glenview Lounge are grid ref 088 139 and road directions to registration are; take the R671 from Clonmel (signposted Dungarvan) and travel to Ballydonagh Crossroads (petrol pumps on your right) and turn right for Newcastle. At next junction turn right again and this brings you into Newcastle Village.From Newcastle take the Clogheen road for about 4 km until you meet the Village of Gotenbridge and turn sharp right across the bridge and the Glenview Lounge is on your right. From Cahir take the R670 to Ardfinnian. In the village of Ardfinnian take the road at the Hill Bar to the left which is a steep uphill road with a sharp left turn. Follow this road for approx 3 km and the Glenview Lounge is on your left just before you cross the bridge into Gotenbridge.
