Huge Numbers for the Crossing Print

Peak's Mountaineering Club Notes 25th April 2010

Mother Nature was on the side of the Peaks Club on Saturday when she held off the rain and winds for the day. We had very pleasant walking weather with good underfoot conditions and we also had the turnout to prove it. The numbers taking part were a smidgen under 200 and getting bodies to the various start points at the appointed time was a logistical success. The buses ran like clockwork and the choice of the Glenview Lounge in Gotenbridge was an inspired one. The early walkers who also were self navigating their 30 kilometre route were at the Hares Gap before eight o clock and over eighty of them set off in good order with their wi navigation packs and control cards to enter in the codes at the unmanned checkpoints and get them signed at the manned ones.
The first led B walk was also on the mountain starting from the Vee hairpin at 9.30am. This Walk hit all the high points in its 17 kilometres route back to the Glenview Lounge.
The C Walk started from the County Boundary on the Melleray road and climbed Crohan West before finishing in Gotenbridge after covering almost 9 kilometres. All walkers were given a good meal of stew with dessert and tea/coffee served by the Peaks Club. Each participant also received a signed personal certificate of participation in the Knockmealdown Crossing. The music and camaraderie of walkers and clubbers made for the most successful days walking in the peaks club .Take a bow all who helped in any way to make everything run like clockwork. Peaks are looking forward to a repeat crossing next year with another day on our lovely mountains walking with friends.
All walks next week Sunday the 2nd May are in the Galtees with John Byrne and Phillip Dunne leading the 10am walk. The noon walk at 12 is led by Andy Ryan assisted by Tom Ryan and Aine Lynch. There is also the first of the short evening walks on Wednesday 5th May at 18.30 led by Justin McCarthy. All walks start from Eldon’s at the given time and can be a assessed by logging on to the clubs website at www.peaksmcclonmel.ie or by calling the PRO Bernard on mobile 08629837220. It may be the official start of summer next week but bring all the gear as the weather can change very quickly on the mountains. The weather forecast early in the morning is also well worth the few minutes as it will help guide in your choice of mountain gear for your days walking.
