Dungarvan Walk Down Print

Peak's Mountaineerting Club Notes  17th May 2010

Saturday the 22nd  May  is our big day in the Comeragh’s when we have our annual Dungarvan walk down which will be led by Pascal Byrne, Michael Tobin, and Joe Quigley. This walk at a civilised pace covers about 30 kilometres give or take a kilometre or two and starts from Eldon’s at 8am sharp. The bus will drop the walkers off at the Holy Year cross and we are on “shanks mare” for the rest of the day. There will be a number of stops on the way for food and a hot drink so bring enough to last a time on the mountains of around 8 hours. The walk is a long one but not too difficult for regular walkers but you are advised to bring all the gear as the weather on top is much different from ground level. The walk finishes in Bridgie Terry’s where a meal can be obtained and the necessary rehydration therapy undertaken. Arrangements are in place for a drop off of a change of clothing to be left at Brigdie’s for a wash and freshen up after the walk. If you need to avail of this service be at Eldon’s at 8pm on Thursday 20th where Lorcan will bring you bags to Bridgie Terry’s where they will be stored in a locked room until Saturday evening when you can reclaim them. This will save you carrying it on the walk and leave more room for water and food. There is also a return bus back to Clonmel later for everyone who needs it.
On Sunday May 23rd there is a led walk in the Galtees with P J O Meara assisted by Sean Walsh and Nora O Donovan and this walk starts at 12.00 as usual.
Tom Dalton led the Walk in the Knockmealdown’s on the 9th of May and he covered this route
The walk began after parking our cars at the car park on the right hand side 1km from Clogheen on the “V” road and entering the wood on the East side of the car park and climbing steady for 2km until we left the wood and came out on the mountain and then continue to climb to the top of the hill Knockshanahullion  852mts a bronze age burial mount then S/W line down to Knocknalougha  and crossing the Avondu way to the edge of a wood at Shanrahan South where the views of the three counties meeting are spectacular and here we had the first of two lunch breaks.  After lunch in nice sunshine we took an Easterly route to the edge of the wood and followed the Araglen River for a few hundred meters when we descended a steep slope to cross the river and followed up the stream almost to its source and stopped at the many lovely waterfalls for photos with blooming primroses in abundance At some of the higher falls the we took an Easterly direction after 3kms up river and met the Avendu Way once again which we followed towards the Gap but stopping for the second lunch at the 3 Dun’s a “T” junction and also where some had a well earned siesta. Continuing our walk we ascended Knocknalougha (the hill over Bay Lough) and on reaching the top coolness in the weather set in. It was coats on and descended to the cars one hour later. A good day on the Eastern side of the Knockmealdown’s.
