Eldon Walk 2010 Print
Sunday on the Galtees was a day of mixed conditions. Heavy showers, warm sunshine and stiff breezes made for a day of many seasons with all the gear needed on different occasions. Michael Power led the early walk in a swop with Kevin O Donnell and Michael led in to the woods on the forest road from the Cush Boreen. Into the woods and on a westward course across the low ground and the scenic walk along the ice road to Lough Curra was the choice. The weather turned nasty and some adventurous members headed up the gully at the rear of the Lough while Michael led the main group across under the shelter of Galtymore towards the coll between Galtymore and Galtybeg. The weather improved rapidly and the steep climb up towards the top of Galtybeg soon had the blood warmed and the gear packed away. On top it was another world with fine sunny day for the lunch break where the gully climbers rejoined the main group. Michael dropped off towards Greenane and picked up the sheep track for the descent to Boreen Lough. The route home was fairly simple across the coll, up the Cush and the nice pleasant walk out to the cars after a good days walking.
Sunday the 20th is the Eldon Walk which is in the Comeragh’s and will include the mass for deceased members. The early walk is led by Tom Dalton assisted by John Morrissey. The noon walk is led by Brendan Nyhan assisted by Richard Williams and Fionnuala Kennedy. All walks meet at a prearranged place for the mass at 4pm where we remember all our club members who have passed onto their eternal reward. Afterwards there is the barbecue where our team of highly trained MCC (men can cook) will demonstrate their cooking skills. This is always a very enjoyable event with steaks, sausages, bread, salads soft drinks and much more for our club members all free of charge. The food and the preparation is the work of many hands and with a favourable weather forecast a great day is planned.
