Peak's Mountaineering Club Notes Summer this year appears to have no end and our sunny days on the mountains continue and last Sunday was one of the best. The Peaks Club were out in great numbers on both walks for the Eldon walk and mass. Tom Dalton led the early walk from Carey’s Castle to Long Hill and picked up the cairn. Swinging westwards he dropped to the stream and back up over the top to the woods. Keeping the high ground as long as possible Tom led back to Carey’s Castle by forest track and open mountain to the cars. A quick change of gear and a short drive brought his crew to the rendezvous for the BBQ. Brendan Nyhan and Fionnuala Kennedy had charge of the noon walk and Russeltown wood was their start point. Heading for Lachnafrankee where the lunch stop was held in glorious sunshine. The horseshoe back was by way of Long Hill, and Glenary Bridge and the pull up the firebreak to pick up the forest tracks to Russeltown wood.
All the walks joined together at the previously agreed rendezvous for mass which was celebrated by Fr P.J Fagan. This is one of our special days when absent friends and our deceased are remembered in our prayers. The Peaks members did the readings and participated in the ceremonies in a special way. Afterwards the catering team got into full speed with steaks, burgers, sausages, salads, desserts and much more served in brilliant weather and convivial company. It was late in the evening before we left after enjoying ourselves to pieces, well fed and tired after a day in our lovely mountains. Well done to our catering heroes, our home crews who supplied salads and treats and all our club members which make the Peaks more than just a mountaineering club.
Next Sunday the 27th June is our last Sunday’s walk for the season and it is on the mountain of the women Slievenamon. John Byrne and Joe Quigley are leading the 10.00am walk and the noon walk at 12 is led by Greg Kenny, Jimmy Trehy and Robert O Connor. After the walk we meet in Eldon’s for presentation of prizes for the photo competition and some finger food courtesy of the Morris family. The evening walks continue each Wednesday at 18.30 from Eldon’s and details on your meets list or on our website at www.peaksmcclonmel.ie |
