Report on the Holly Walk Print

Peaks Mountaineering Club

Peaks Notes

19th December 2011

We had a great day on the Comeragh Mountains on Sunday with both walks well supported despite the attraction of the shopping. Niall Quinlivan led the early walk subbing for his brother who is temporarily out of action. Niall led in from Hanora’s Cottage and followed the stream to the Y junction where the gallant team of twelve forded and picked up the old road to the second stream. Heading on a bearing of 82 east and then swinging on to 42 degrees it was over the top and down to Lough Mora for a spot of lunch in much civilised conditions. After some nifty contouring along the tree line it was back over the top again in snow and very photogenic rocks, it was back to the old ruins and picking up the stream retraced the route to the cars.

The holly walk once again proved the most popular walk of the year with about fifty walkers including a couple from New Hampshire enjoying the day. Tom Ryan planned and led the walk with Michael Greene on the count and Noreen keeping order at the rear. A holly bush had been located and everyone got a sprig of berried holly and left plenty for our feathered friends. Martin Coughlan assisted by Helen and Fionnuala kept the multitude sustained with his wonderful hot chocolate and marshmallows. The walk lasted about two and a half hours before it was back to Eldon’s to see the main man himself where in his special hut he listened to requests for presents, checked everyone had written that important letter and asked for carrots for the reindeer and a glass of milk for himself on the big night. Eldon’s had a lovely spread of finger food and mulled wine for the tired walkers and with plenty of mince pies everyone had a great day. Many thanks to the staff of Eldon’s for their kindness to the club and the kids on the last day of the walking calendar this year. For the very fit or the over indulged Sean Walsh is leading a gentle recovery walk to burn off some calories from Morrison’s Old Garage Cahir on the 27th Dec at 12pm lasting about 3 hours there abouts.Check our website at www.peaksmcclonmel.ie for details of upcoming walks and trips away including the Kerry weekend, photo gallery and the Kilimanjaro climb.
