Peaks Notes
6th February 2012
Sunday’s walking was messy and wet with drizzling rain and wind on the Knockmealdown range. The early walk was led by John Morrissey who started from the woods at Gotenbridge and headed up Crohan West. Knockmeal was the next climb and then the drop off to the shelter of the woods and a lunch break in shelter. There was a split in the walk with some heading for Knocknafallia and the reminder to the rendezvous at the wall where the course was set for Knockmealdown before dropping off Roches hill to pick up the track through the woods and the cars where the change into fresh gear was very welcome. Well done to Josephine and Noreen who stepped up to the early walk.
The noon walk was led by Sean Brackett who led in from the Vee and onto St Declan’s Way and up by the coll. Heading for Knockmealdown in wet and windy conditions but with twenty four hardy souls to lead Sean and Justin topped out exchanged pleasantries with another walk and then reversed back the lead in.
Walks next week are all in the Comeragh’s and hopefully Mother Nature has better walking weather planned. Pack maps no 75 and a spot of lunch with a hot drink as the leaders have an interesting route planned.
The early walk is led by Niall Quinlivan assisted by Alvara Duggan. The noon walk is lead by Fiona Hegarty assisted by Fionnuala Kennedy and Donal Murphy.
All walks leave from Eldon’s at the given time and wear all the winter gear as the weather can change very rapidly and at over five hundred metres it is five degrees colder than at Eldon’s. There are more photos and news items on our website which can be visited by logging on to www.peaksmcclonmel.ie . Walking and climbing our lovely mountains is a very healthy exercise which is not competitive and very satisfying. More details on joining the Peaks Club from the PRO Bernard Lennon on mobile no 0862937220 and why not take up the clubs offer of two free led walks before joining.
